Im really looking forward to Public Acts this weekend. PublicActs/Johannesburg Youre invited to attend 24 hours PublicActs in Johannesburg on Saturday 22nd to Sunday 23rd March 2014. Over a three-month period, PublicActs has been exploring new and emerging public spaces in Johannesburg and its many different manifestations and potentials. Acknowledging different interpretations of publicness, six creative collaborators alongside local actors have been producing a series of site-specific interactions, installations and performances to provoke discussion and the imagination around future public spaces in Johannesburg. The project culminates in a 24 hours PublicAct inviting spectators to playfully engage and interact with the creative interpretations. Alongside these imaginative provocations PublicActs program is hosting a public discussion with local interlocutors. Critically reflecting upon the various creative outputs and themes tackled on, the intention is to re-think conditions and production of public space in Johannesburg. This PublicActs experiment aims to challenge urban actors and decision-makers to engage and construct public spaces in Johannesburg in innovative and democratic ways. Findings and creative outputs shall function as a guide on how to approach, use, misuse, appropriate and imagine public space in African cities. We hope to have awoken your interest in this experiment and would be happy to see you for this 24 hours PublicActs experiment. Please RSVP to me@katharina-rohde or potgieter.liesl@gmail Kind Regards, Katharina Rohde & Thiresh Govender (Curators) PublicActs are: ACT #1 FROM COMPOUND TO CITY [CONDITIONED ENTRY- Tedet- Time, Troca, Exit time] Euridice Kala explores the idea of arrival in Johannesburg, with its connotations of displacement, geography and belonging. Her performance series derives from intense observations on seemingly mundane daily actions and further engagement with people arriving to Jeppe´s Square. ACT#2 FIVE BY FIVE: OBSTRUCTIONS / MARKERS Zen Marie´s installations are for the facilitation of conversations on street corners, questioning and rethinking ideas of crime in the city. This work engages with the gross flattening and anonymity as well as the foregrounding of the perpetrator in the collection of crime data. ACT #3 HOLLOW SCENE OVERFLOW Francis Burger´s Field-Note-Book and Guided-Walks are exploring the natural life in Jeppestown. By inspecting grasses and insects, she is testing the opportunistic emergence and resilience of nature in Public Spaces. ACT # 4 FOR LOVE OF THE OTHER Joao Orecchia´s Sound Installations want to create unlikely spaces of kindness, vulnerability and love in Johannesburg. These ephemeral spaces aim to have an emotional effect on a person who passes through it. ACT # 5 PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH (ongoing) Jhono Bennett (1:1) and Linzi Lewis are interested in the Kwa Mai Mai Market as a space of gathering, spirituality and heritage.Through participatory research the aim is to acknowledge and visualize the dynamics of this market as an important public space in Johannesburg. During their Public Act Jhono and Linzi will be engaging with people on site as well as implementing a Kwa Mai Mai Poster and Planting Campaign. Beyond the 24 hours PublicActs also visit the virtual gathering space: whatdoesmaimaimean.blogspot 24 hours PublicActs will take place on Saturday 22nd to Sunday 23rd March 2014.
