Im really rather appalled at all the posts/comments Im seeing saying that because Robin Williams committed suicide, he [a] was a coward, [b] was selfish, [c] took the easy way out, [d] quit, [d] gave tacit approval/encouragement to others to commit suicide, and or [e] failed as an inspiration to others dealing with depression. He did not have a responsibility to be an inspiration to everyone else who was suffering from depression. And, it’s not a matter of right or wrong, bravery or selfishness. He had a sickness, and he ultimately wasnt able to beat it. A sickness that takes away the ability to fully understand everything rationally, like how our actions will affect those we care about the most. That demands compassion. Showing compassion for someone who loses that struggle isnt condoning or encouraging suicide, its just what it is, showing compassion. Am I glad he is no longer tormented by his demons? Yes. Am I glad that he killed himself to attain that? No. The two viewpoints arent mutually exclusive.
