Im remiss to talk about resolutions beyond the general sense. It seems odd that we prepare for one day a year to remind ourselves that we can be better people—either for ourselves, or for others—and then drown the sentiment in booze and false promises. The reason I cook, the reason I teach others to cook, and the reason I write about food is based on the simple premise that food and art are, to me at least, the same thing. Sustenance is ageless in the history of humankind. It is a requirement, but it is also, as Escoffier reminds us, an opportunity to teach, to learn, to feed, and to grow. There are priceless examples in your own lives of how food can shape a life, an experience, a family... You can be young, old, or lost somewhere in between. In my life, at least, I have come to trust the notion that food can be both the Great Equalizer and the Great Divider. It is used as a political tool, and it is used as a social divider. But it also creates new bonds and saves lives. Cook. Cook heartily. Do it for others. Do it for yourself. And please, do, pass the lessons on.
