Im satisfied to say that OU Student Life met with us and agreed to the conditions of our petition. They assured us that serious repercussions will occur for any group/organization that themes an event around parts of minority culture. Additionally, we discussed the need for mandatory cultural sensitivity training for all incoming freshman (which will begin this upcoming summer) and for ALL faculty (yes, ALL faculty). Student Life is also initiating the process of developing a campaign along the lines of #NotYourMascot & #ItsACultureNotACostume. We also discussed better avenues for reporting micro (and outright) aggressions in a way that does not require victims to interact with their perpetrators and/or other non-allies. Finally, we discussed the need for Greek organizations to host mandatory facilitated conversations about race and culture -- instead of just inviting brown people to come eat dinner with them -- to satisfy the multicultural component of their organization. It was so heartening to be in a room with fellow natives, my mentor, my students, and allies -- as well as administration who seemed open and willing to listen & learn. The changes we discussed will have a positive impact for all minority communities on campus. In any event, we made it clear to OU that we are #NotYourMascot ! Wopila for the support!
