Im shocked by some of the posts in the earlier thread on women, health care, and religion. Let me make some points here. In my view women are people. They are full fledged human beings. American women are full fledged American citizens. They are not concepts in the minds and theological systems of religious people. They are not conditional beings subject to control by others, based on personal attitudes toward women or procreation. Women do not lose their citizenship and their rights when they become pregnant. They do not lose their personhood when they are raped, or voluntarily impregnated, or because they choose not to have children. They are not less than because they are the ones who can or might or do give birth to the children fathered by men. These are facts. And we need to deal with these facts as a nation. Procreation and all problems associated with it are part of the national health care picture and the national health care discussion. Maybe its time for a Personhood bill for human being in the United States. Maybe its time for a national strike by American women.
