Im so learning about teens lately, especially my own sons. Ive been doing a lot of studying and here is one. Confession: I record the Dr. Phil shows, I pick which ones to watch and listen to especially when it comes to parenting. One thing I learned recently. Parents are to control the surrounding environment of the household, make the rules, expectations, meet educational commitments and standards, chores to do, provide a reward and consequence system.... and stand by it. It is not the other way around. Also, parents are not to act as best friends to their children or teens, because it is a cop out to in someway to buy their love. Then you just lost your leverage as a parent. As they get older in their late twenties, then you can be a friend to them. Not when their brains are not fully developed by age 25. These Millennial generation is the product of success of the baby boomers. I am one. I was ruled by very strict parents, and it was Yes sir, Yes mam or mom and you didnt question or use the word why?. If you were told to do. I was ruled and learned to gain respect of my parents with the belt or corporal punishment. It kept me inline and out of trouble. My parents never had to worry about my grades or do my homework. I just knew I better do it or else. My parents didnt have to tell me to take the trash out, or mow the lawn, rake the leaves, wash dishes or wash my own clothes are mop the floor or scrub the bathroom, or even vacuum the carpet. If I saw it that it needed to be done, they told me, dont wait for me to tell you..That is how it was when I was growing up.
