Im so sorry that I havent posted an update yet on the family that everyone has pulled together to help. Yesterday was such an emotional day that I actually couldnt find the words to explain the events that unfolded as the day progressed. And yall know how I like to turn my status updates into mini novels, so I had to wait until I could gather my thoughts more fully. As it started to rain yesterday afternoon on my way home, I couldnt help but pull over on the side of the road and thank God for the miracles that have occurred in just a few short days. An entire community, made up of people both local and far away, came together to change the lives of a mom and her two boys. And as it started to rain, I couldnt help but think of everyone who pitched in, donated, prayed, and shared the fundraiser page.... And how, for the first time in a long time, the rain was something that no longer needed to be feared. As the camper was being set up, there were two things that I noticed. The first was that a family of three was going to be living in a space that was, essentially, smaller than the size of my own bedroom. And, number two, how Christy cried as she explored the camper and exclaimed that it was a mansion. It was a moment that I dont think any of us will ever forget. I really wish that we had thought of videotaping that moment. If we had, you would have been able to see the 12 year olds excitement that the camper had lights that could be turned on and how he pointed to the vent in the floor and looked up with astonishment upon realizing the camper had air conditioning. You would have seen the huge grin on the 7 year olds face when he saw the bed that was made up with clean sheets and a new comforter set. And you would have heard the whole family ooh and ahh over the simplest things. Theres a toilet paper holder! Look! It came with a radio! An oven. A real oven! Theres a shelf! I can put up pictures of my family! Windows! Look, Mom, there are windows! The things that most of us take for granted are the things that mean the world to them. In the last few days, a crew came out and cleaned the land and cut down dead trees. An 8 year old girl and her mom delivered toys. Another family donated dishes and lots and pans and utensils to replace everything that had to be thrown away. Another family came to look at the plumbing and brought supper. And, of course, we cant forget Tristan, who set up the fundraiser for Christy, the generous family who donated the camper, the two hardworking men who moved it out here and set it up, the people and families who have quietly donated, the incredible lady who offered to pay for their water and electricity for the next six months, the numerous offers of help to supply clothes and toys or the kind hearted offers to help find employment for Christy now that shes getting back on her feet. We have had a very generous offer of a car and Ill need to call on my Midlothian friends to help pull this together. We still need someone to look at the car ( a 2001 VW) and give an estimate for repairs. We dont think it needs much, but it wont hold a charge and will need to be taken to a shop. Unfortunately, we dont have a lot of money to put into it and we are humbly asking for this to be done for free or at a great discount. The car is currently in Midlothian and we would really appreciate if someone could look at it and give us an estimate for repairs. This car is what will allow Christy to travel back and forth to a job and she cant make it without one. Also, if you ever grew up in the country, then you might remember that the school bus doesnt go down every road. Every morning at 5:55, Christy has to walk with her 7 year old son for a mile down a dirt road... Rain or shine or mud or cold... So that he can catch the bus off the highway. This car means that they wont have to walk in the dark anymore. Christy can drive him to the bus stop and they can sit in a warm car while waiting from now on. We are also hoping to find a storage building to hold their food and clothes. Someone donated storage tubs to put their food in and theyre currently being stacked under the camper. I know it seems that the ultimate has been achieved... Christy and her family now have a place to call home... But please continue to remember them in your prayers. Please pray that Christy will find a stable job that will allow her to support her family. Please pray that her boys will turn into upstanding, compassionate, and hard working men. And please dont forget to pray for everyone who helped make this dream come true. You are all truly Angels on earth. May you each have a very Merry and Blessed Christmas!
