Im sorry I didnt post anything yesterday regarding Lance. I know many of you are concerned about what is going on with him, and that means so much to me. Thank you for caring so much. Lance had surgery yesterday on both of his hands. He had his tendons released on all 8 fingers. In kids with Hurlers, the tendons arent usually as smooth and dont glide as well as typical tendons. Therefore, Lance didnt have complete range of motion in his hands and what is worse, is that his is fingers arent being worked as much as they should because of his tendons not allowing them to, so over time the joints in his fingers would stiffen and that would be so much harder to try to fix. With that said, the hope of this surgery was to increase range of motion and use of his hands currently, but also to help prevent or at least prolong joint stiffness from happening over time. He did amazing with his surgery yesterday. He was so big. When the nurse was wheeling him down to the OR on the bed (we were still with him) he said, Go faster! Lol. The procedure went well. The doctor was pleased. He said his tendons were in fact lumpy and bumpy as opposed to smooth in most peoples hands. Lance has six incisions in each hand and his hands are completely bandaged for a week. When he woke up from surgery you could definitely sense disappointment/sadness from him regarding the bandages. However, he never cried or whined. He simply said, I dont like surgery. The nurse gave him a sprite. He was so thirsty. He said, Thats delicious! 😉 The surgery was outpatient, and he got discharged very quick. Mom and dad went to our house before we got there and put away his bike, tricycle, and scooters. We also knew he couldnt swim or bathe for a week, but I definitely didnt think of all the ways hed be affected. We have to help him aim at potty, feed him, brush teeth, etc. He wanted to play candy land when we got home yesterday. We sat down to play and a tear rolled down his cheek. That simply broke my heart. Today, he has mastered spinning the spinner with his thumb and he can move his guyon candy land. I also saw him using his elbow to get something he wanted today. I think we will be amazed at what he learns to do by the time he gets his bandages off. Through the night last night he was in pain, but after a 3:30am dose of ibuprofen he started sleeping better. I just hope that he heals well and regains use of his hands quickly. Hoping that occupational therapy will really help and we will learn some good techniques to use with him at home. Im sorry for the long post, but Im a detail person and sometimes its just hard to leave anything out. 😉 Thanks again to many of you for your ongoing care and concern for Lance.
