Im sorry this is so long, but please just read this. If you dont have the time, then please just share this. I was very lucky to be on the register as I was simply covering for another persons break, and for business to be slow and not have a line to allow this interaction to take place. I think maybe this was meant to happen? Either way, I felt compelled to get this out. Feel free to put this anywhere you please. It could help a family in ways you cant even imagine... So I got to meet one of my heroes today. I was at work as the cashier and a biker guy came up. He looked like any other biker wearing all black and leather and shades over his eyes and more then a little scruff on his face. On his biker vest I noticed some patches sewn on, more then a few relating to the 2001 September 11 attacks. They got us all right. They wanted to kill us, and they succeeded. Many died that day and in following days, not just from our country, but others as well. His patches struck something in me. I asked this biker where he got them. He responded, online. I told him, the reason I ask is because thats my ship. The U.S.S. NEW YORK. That is my ship. A little startled, he asked, the one with the world trade center steel? I responded with, about 7.5 tons from the world trade center. This sparked a conversation that I am truly honored to have had. As we talked, I learned he belonged to a group of riders that participates in combating the Westboro Baptist Church and the hate they spew out at our brothers and sisters. Westboro says that your brother/sister deserved to die because this country tolerates gays. Westboro says that your father/mother deserved to die because God is punishing this country for turning its back on God. Westboro says that your son/daughter deserved to die because God hates them for being a gay. This rough looking biker belongs to a group that, when called to serve, will ride to military funerals and form a perimeter around the friends and family of the deceased soldier. They use themselves as a shield to make a barrier to keep that evil group out, so the family and friends of the deceased can remember their soldier, and grieve and mourn their loss in peace as they should have the right to do, though unfortunately our Supreme Court disagrees with this. This biker group was formed for a reason. I learned he himself had lost 5 friends in the September 11 attacks, one of which he was talking to on the phone while these events progressed. I was blown away by this man. I would be lying if I said I wasnt as giddy as a school girl meeting the celebrity that they are currently infatuated with. I was extremely giddy. I have so much respect for this man and the protection he offers to my brothers and sisters. I remember how heated I got when I first learned of this through an article I read online while sitting in radio central on board my ship. Words fail to describe how heated I felt. To meet this man who provides protection from this, who himself had suffered the loss of loved ones from that day.....WOW. As he thanked me for my service to this country, I thanked him back, making it clear to him how much of an honor it was to meet him. Truly, this was MY honor. I AM A VETERAN, and I hurt when I think about how this evil Westboro Baptist Church makes it their mission to protest these funerals. This man that I met is truly a hero. This is not a story. This really did happen, and it made my day like you cant even imagine. I felt I needed to share this experience. I want to ask everyone who sees this post to please, please, share this. If it isnt you, then maybe it will be one of your friends, or a friend of your friend, who has to suffer with the unbearable pain of a LOVED ONE RETURNING HOME IN A CASKET, and then the fear when you get word that the Westboro Baptist Church is threatening to protest your funeral with words of hate and talk and songs about how your loved one deserved to die because this country has turned their back on God and other such nonsense. The dread when you learn that they are on their way. I dont want to waste this opportunity. If ever needed, contact one of these biker groups, it should be easy enough to Google, and seek them out. They are all over the country and consider it an honor to protect a fallen soldier, a fallen hero. They will protect you and your family and friends and allow you to mourn in peace.
