Im very happy to say that I have my motorbike back now, it was no more than 500 yards from my home the whole time. The sorry news is that it had been left, on its stand but with some obvious damage, the ignition had been knocked out to release the steering lock, a side panel had been torn off to access the battery, the top box forced open and a pair of very cheap sunglasses taken and (as far as I can tell in the dark) finally the L plates taken. The sorry side to the story is that its been stood looking stolen and dumped along a footpath in Layer that is surely used frequently and on a daily basis, yet it has taken until 5pm for anyone to take notice of it. Im very grateful to the chap who knocked on my door knowing it was my bike, but disappointed that people must have been along this path and even had to squeeze by it to get through, yet nobody has thought it suspicious enough to report. Anyway, I am relieved and grateful to have it back in my possession, unfortunately, however, it now needs work doing before its road-worthy again.
