Im very heartened to see that Indonesia considers ISIS a threat--and has gone as far as to ban the organisation, ban ISIS-supportive videos online and to initiate campaigns educating the public about its deviance. I hope Malaysia and Singapore and Brunei take similar steps. Actually all of ASEAN should follow Indonesias lead. We dont need the kind of Islam that is currently exported from the Middle East, which is tainted with vicious Sunni-Shiite sectarianism, or political ideologies that grew out of hostile encounters with the West. Islam in the archipelago flowered through trade and peaceful contact, not against a backdrop of tribal warfare, succession disputes and the assassination of caliphs. Being distant from the centre doesnt make this gentle, accommodating and moderate expression of Islam any less pure or correct. It does mean however the practice of Islam unencumbered by a lot of political baggage. Lastly, those who keep saying that Muslims are fixated on condemning Israel, but are silent on ISIS, the nation with the largest population of Muslims in the world is telling you that you can shut up now.
