Im writing this because I know I dont have to. I am writing because I owe no one an explanation about my gender or how I choose to express it. I am writing because letting you know now might be a little less awkward than bar conversations shouted over the din of a thousand shouted bar conversations. Maybe. Im writing because this might be the first time you have to come to terms with your attitudes towards transpeople and your own gender. This might be the hundredth. Im writing because by beginning the process of transitioning (through hormone replacement therapy) I am taking an active part in aligning my mental, spiritual and physical selves. I want to be clear: I dont believe it was a mistake. I believe I was meant to live a dual experience; to come into this world in one body and leave it in another. Walking this Earth as a woman will greatly inform the kind of man I want to be and I dont take that for granted. I am writing because I am dedicating my life to supporting, acknowledging, respecting womyn (ALL womyn) in a way that contributes to the erosion and eventual destruction of misogynist patriarchy in this country. Liberation that doesnt prioritize the needs and hopes and dreams of womyn and especially womyn of color is not liberation at all, and a trans movement without any lens for these issues will not go unnoticed or unchanged by me. I am writing because the days ahead will be sweet, challenging and hard-won. Because I have faith that you will seek out any knowledge you may lack, reach out during good times and bad and recognize that neither one of us has anything to lose, only everything to gain. Kanoa.
