Imagine a preacher standing on a stage by a mirror addressing the congregation. A spotlight is on him while the sanctuary is in darkness. “I’m sure we all have heard the parable in the Bible where a rich landowner entrusts a sum of money to three different men, and I’m sure most of you feel you have a good firm grasp on the meaning of that particular parable, but humor me and let me put that particular parable in a different light to see what more we can receive from it.” “We are called to be a light unto this world.” He turns the mirror so that the spotlight fully illuminates him in its light. “Some professing Christ will congregate to bask in the light of Christ’s Love and Grace. They never witness or show unconditional Love to anyone outside of their church, or very seldom do. But what are we called to do in scripture as followers of Christ? If I stand in the glow of Christ’s Love and Grace and I don’t share it with the world I am hoarding the light and being selfish.” The preacher turns the mirror so that the light from the spotlight shoots across the sanctuary to a person standing by another mirror, illuminating them for the congregation to see. “There are rare moments in life when people will witness an example of pure unconditional sacrifice and Love. When a God fearing person will give their last dollar to someone in need, or someone will go way above and beyond to show kindness to someone hurting and alone. And then is when the Light of God will shine.” The person in the glow from the preachers mirror turns their mirror, sending a beam of light across the sanctuary to reveal yet another person by a mirror. “We who profess Christ as our savior are the only thing whereby the world may judge the light and power of God’s word. It might not be fare that Christ is judged by our actions but it is a fact in this world. So when a person who professes Christ as their savior and their guide in life makes themselves available to any soul hurting and in need, Christ’s Light shines.” Yet another mirror is turned and another person revealed in the light. By now the sanctuary is awash in the light from the spotlight. “ When all who profess Christ share the light of Christ the world is a brighter place. But more often the world focusses on the believer who thinks it is ok to lie to get what they want, to win some battle.” The last person revealed in the light from the mirror vanishes as the mirror is turned. “The world focusses on the believer who is money hungry and boastful.” The next person revealed in the mirrors light vanishes as the next mirror is turned. “When we who profess Christ ignore the hurting, deceive and manipulate, when we do not show truth and love in our lives the Light of Christ and our testimony does not shine.” The light go’s out and the congregation is plunged into darkness. The spotlight comes back on to reveal the preacher again. “God has given all of us gifts that can be used to further His Grace. His Word is the testimony proclaiming His will and the Grace He has for all who will take up their cross and follow Christ. But if we as followers of Christ do not share His light with the world it will plunge into darkness. You ask yourself why the world is so dark now? Look to each of us as followers. We have gotten to the point that we are hoarding the Light. We do not go out into the world and share the Light and Grace that has been shown upon us. “If you love me, feed my sheep!” Christ told Peter. He says the same to you today. Leave this place of worship and Grace and spread the Light. Don’t let your actions or inactions dampen or put out the light. If you see a lie; expose it! If you see a hurt; tend it! If you see a need; fill it! And then the light will shine, and the world will be a brighter place.
