Imagine another country invaded ours and some of our own people betrayed us and now ruled over us. Imagine that these rulers werent even fair or lenient, but crooked, corrupt, and choosing to be servants to our enemy over befriending their once neighbors. What if the martial laws enacted upon us were enforced on even the most innocent. How would you feel? This is exactly the political scene that Jesus stepped into. Those are exactly the kind of rulers Jesus so bitterly rebuked. They had befriended the herodians, created and enforced oral laws, and publicly punished anyone who broke them. It was the law that ruled--ruthlessly, unfairly, and unjustly. It was the law that demanded and required. It was Grace that set us free.
