Imagine living in a community where the values and beliefs of people are homogenous, everything you see is in the shades of black, grey, and white. You have never heard of war, conflict, colours, and death. The Giver presents to you a futuristic community where sufferings are non-existent, confusion and fear never heard of. Peoples lifestyles are formulated, including the food, education, future occupations and even spouses of the citizens, which are chosen by the government. Those living there do not have higher consciousness about the real world. The memory of their past has been taken away from them, which is only accessible to someone known as the Receiver The Receiver bears all the history and memories of the real world, which makes him closest to humanity. Being the wisest of the community, the Receiver actually hopes that humanity could be restored to the people. The movie reveals how the Receiver accomplishes his hopes with the help of Jonas, the next receiver. It depicts how Jonas becomes the Giver instead of the Receiver, by returning the memories of pain and happiness, and ultimately, humanity back to the people.
