Impending strike at Makerere University over increase in graduation fees: Honestly, why do we keep spending money on celebrations when we are a poor country???? It is very clear that the largest percentage of the graduation fees is spent on holding a none sustainable and very unpopular and unnecessarily big function which is a burden to students, guardians and parents. A big number of students dont even like it. They dont want it. Thats why they hold private graduation parties outside the university immediately after the wasteful university function. Since it is not mandatory to participate in that function, why cant the payment of the fees be OPTIONAL and be limited to only those who want to physically attend the public function???? Some universities no longer hold these functions. Makereres excuse of increament of these fees is lame. Course Completion Certificates should not be charged. It is the duty of the university and any other teaching institution to provide certifications as proof of the student having completed the course. There are many ways of providing this certification. Printing expensive certificates is clearly cheating students.
