Implanted some rational ideas into my moms mind. So today was the day my grandfather had expired 14 years ago. This was the conversation this morning - Mom - dont eat anything with salt or oil today. Me - why? Mom - to respect your grandfather. Me - i do. But how does food come into that? Mom - hell sense it. Me - hes dead, isnt he? Mom - ya, but his soul will. Me - you know theres nothing called soul, right? Mom - yes, but out of respect for his memories. Lets just call his memories his soul? Me - ok, but memories cannot be hurt, can it? Also, how does food disrespect memories? Mom - Just do it, its a tradition. Me - Thats it.. THATS THE WORD..!! Mom - err, what? Me - see we do these things because its a tradition, right? There is no logic behind it. There is no way to rationalise it. We choose to do it. Its a custom. Nothing called a soul will be benefited by it, nor will any memories be hurt if we dont follow it. The only reason why we keep doing these things is because they are handed down social norms. Thats the only reason. It all falls apart when we try to rationalize it. Now i am not against it. I loved grandad and i will do it. I just had this conversation to discuss why we are doing it. Mom - hmmm.. Seems you are right. Discussion is the key, discussion makes a person think. Not confrontation. Confrontation makes a person adhere more tightly to his/her irrational beliefs
