Importance of Hip Strength for Proper Throwing One of the components of throwing is often overlooked is the hip. We talk about the importance of core strength but that also needs to include the gluteus maximus, rectus femoris, and hamstring muscles. These muscles play an important role in providing a solid foundation for the thrower in order to be able to generate power. From the transfer of weight through the wind up to the throw, the hips play a significant role. When we encounter patients with elbow and shoulder injuries following throwing activities, more often than not we find weakness in the muscle groups discussed above.
