Important Reminder: Don’t enable iCloud Drive after upgrading to iOS 8: Apple is set to release its highly-anticipated iOS 8 software update for compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod touch tonigh, but there is one important recommendation that those upgrading should keep in mind: it is probably in your best interest to avoid enabling iCloud Drive on iOS 8 for the near future. Find out the reason why ahead. iCloud Drive is the front-facing cloud storage system for sharing files across iPhone, iPad and Mac, but the feature is only compatible with OS X Yosemite. As the latest Mac operating system version remains pre-release software, likely until mid-October, iCloud Drive will prevent iOS apps from syncing with their Mac versions until it is released. Nik Fletcher of Realmac Software, makers of the popular to-do list app Clear for iOS, advises that users ensure that they choose the right option for iCloud Drive after upgrading to iOS 8. If you opt to upgrade to iCloud Drive, you will not be able to access the documents currently stored in iCloud on any devices not running iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite. Meanwhile, if you tap on Not Now for iCloud Drive during the iOS 8 setup process, this will keep iCloud’s Documents and Data sync feature enabled on your iOS 8 device so that you can continue to sync with other iPhones, iPads or Macs running iOS 7 or OS X Mavericks and below. Fletcher also notes that, if you do choose to enable the feature, the process for migrating your iCloud Documents and Data to iCloud Drive, which occurs behind the scenes, could take anywhere from a few seconds to an hour. As there will inevitably be a lot of users upgrading to iOS 8 at once, expect longer waits until migration is completed.
