Important Summits ****************** New Members of Important Organizations : o United Nations – Total Members – 193 (Last Member : South Sudan) o WTO – Total Members – 159 (Last Member : Tajikistan, Laos, Russia) o World Bank and International Monetary Fund – Total Members – 188 (Last Member – South Sudan) o European Union – Total Mewmbers – 28 (Last Member – Croatia) BRICS Summit : Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. This is an international relations conference attended by the head of states or heads of government of the five member states Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Fifth summit was held in Durban, South Africa in the year 2013. This completed the first cycle of BRICS summits. The 2014 BRICS summit was the Sixth annual BRICS summit. This was held from 15th July 2014 to 17th July 2014. o Host - Fortaleza, Brazil o This is the the First multilateral meet in which our PM Modi will participate. o 7th BRICS summit will be held in 2015 at Ufa, Russia ASEAN Summit : An annual meeting held by the member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in relation to economic, and cultural development of Southeast Asian countries. o Member States – 10 (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) o Leader - Le Luong Minh o Recent Summits : 24th – in May 2014 at Myanmar 25th – in November 2014 at Myanmar Member countries (10) – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philipines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam (Sbi Clerks 2014) NATO Summit : This is a summit meeting that is regarded as a periodic opportunity for Heads of State and Heads of Government of NATO member countries to evaluate and provide strategic direction for Alliance activities. o Recent Summit - 2012 (20 to 21st May) Chicago Summit o Next Summit - 2014 (4 to 5 September) Newport, Wales G7 Summit : The 40th G-7 summit 2014 was held at Justus Lipsius building, Brussels at the Council of the European Union on 4 June 2014 – 5 June 2014. It was the first time that the EU hosted a G7 summit. Important Note : G7 was earlier known as G8 but after Russia being expelled from the group, the group is again known as G7. 40th G7 Summit 2014 - Burssels, Belgium (This summit was supposed to be held in Russia in the year 2014, but after suspension of Russia from G8, now it held at Brussels) o Members - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia , United Kingdom, United States of America NAM Summit : The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a group of states which are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. 16th NAM Summit held at Iran in 2013 and 17th will be held at Venezulea in the year 2015. G 20 Summit : Group of Twenty Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (19 countries and EU) o 9th G 20 Leaders Summit 2014 – Brisbane (Australia) o 10th G20 Meeting 2015 - Turkey SAARC Summit : South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation o 17th Summit – Maldieves 2011 o 18th Summit – Kathmandu (proposed) in November 2014 Commonwealth Summit : The 23rd Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 15 to 17 November 2013. Next summit will be hosted by Malta (in 2015). SCO Summit : The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation or SCO Summit was held at Bishkek. Our foreign minister Salman Kurshid attended this. Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) : The Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) is a world summit, aimed at preventing nuclear terrorism around the globe. The first summit was held in Washington, D.C. on April 12, 2010. The second summit was in Seoul (South Korea) in 2012. The third summit was held in The Hague (Netherlands) on March 24-15, 2014. The fourth summit will be held at US in 2016.
