Impressions of Borderlands 2 after about 40 minutes of play, courtesy of Steams free weekend: - Combat is so, so, SO much better. The guns feel a lot more physical, and it no longer feels like Im just clicking on things until a number reaches zero, which was how combat felt in the first game. - So far it seems like theres less inventory management too, which was another problem I had with the first game - you spent more time comparing guns than shooting them. Im sure I havent played enough of the sequel yet to have much of an accurate impression of it though. - The writing is still terrible. From the exposition to the characterisation to the one-liners, its just totally awful. This is the one area that really seems worse than the original. - The aesthetics are less interesting second time around, but they do still work. - The AI still isnt great, but I dont care tbh. This isnt the kind of game where thats such a big deal. - Im not sure how I feel about the apparently more linear structure. I did kind of like the open-worldish feel in Borderlands, even if it wasnt necessarily implemented that well. I couldnt say whether Borderlands 2 feels better or worse in this regard but it does feel different. Overall - People told me Borderlands 2 fixed a lot of the problems with the first game, and I was sceptical, but I have to admit this definitely seems like a huge improvement. It still doesnt seem like something Id personally get much play out of - I still just fundamentally dont enjoy the Diablo gameplay model - but credit to Gearbox for really tightening things and addressing a lot of the big flaws.
