Impressive! Junior Matthew McCoy and first-year student Daniel Piero received two of the 20 Blue Waters internships awarded nationally by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois. The awards will pay each student $5,000 to support a supercomputer research project to investigate problems in statistics, physics and economics. Matthew’s project involves kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of solid-state defect dynamics as well as Monte Carlo simulations that test measures of income distributions in economics. Daniel will run molecular dynamics simulations and visualizations of solid-state acoustic waves and vacancy distributions. They will be mentored by professors Steve Harnish and Darryl Nester and guided by Jonathan Andreas and Michael Edmiston. Daniel and Matthew will present their research at the Blue Waters Symposium in 2015 and submit research papers to the Journal of Computational Science Education.
