In 1571 the Ottoman naval fleet was defeated in the battle of Lepanto in the Gulf of Patras in Greece. The report given by Turkish commanding officer of the Ottoman fleet, Kapudan Pasha, (now in the Turkish national archives) read, “The fleet of the divinely guided Empire encountered the fleet of the wretched infidels, and the will of Allah turned the other way.” While the battle of Lepanto was by no means a crushing defeat for the Ottoman Empire, which had the power and the riches to rebuild its fleet, the commander’s report signaled the ideology that will henceforth set the course for the rapid deterioration, destruction, & ultimate demise of the East. Lack of self-examination, lack of accountability, refusal to take personal responsibility, disguising failure in a religious cloak, textbook examples of how to self-destruct.
