In 1776, at the same time the colonies were declaring independence from Great Britain and its king, iron workers at the Cornwall Iron Furnace were forging munitions that would be used in the American Revolutionary War. By the end of the war, the Cornwall Iron Furnace had made 42 cannons, 86 tons of shot, shot pans, stoves and other iron ware for the Continental Army, according to the Lebanon Daily News.
