In 1834 the Lord Chancellor, Lord Brougham and Vaux, was asked "Do you consider that a compulsory education would be justified, either on principles of public utility or expediency?" to which he replied "I am decidedly of opinion that it is justifiable on neither; but, above all, I should regard anything of the kind as utterly destructive of the end it has in view. Suppose the people of England were taught to bear it, and to be forced to educate their children by means of penalties, education would be made absolutely hateful in their eyes, and would speedily cease to be endured. They who have argued in favour of such a scheme from the example of a military government, like that of Prussia, have betrayed, in my opinion, great ignorance of the nature of Englishmen." (Report of the Parliamentary Committee on the State of Education. 1834) Home Education is a parental right in the UK...And whilst schools are penalising parents and children more and more for disabilities or not being able to keep up, and bullying inside schools is rife...home education is becoming more and more popular inside the UK. I home educate my son, I teach one subject a day, where projects are built up over the weeks on each subject...the subjects at present are....maths, English, science, magic tricks (my sons choice) French, Spanish and Latin.....we go to a gardening group once a week and as my son is reading, researching and writing....I make crafts to sell, mosaic mirrors and bags etc...our life is a casual, and relaxed.....we home educate by the Steiner philosophy and autonomously which means whatever my son wants to learn he can study. I also learn from what my son is studying...today I learnt that tigers eat monkeys :) home-education.org.uk/
