In 1939, Albert Kahn (1869-1942) of Detroit designed the Stinson Aircraft Plant in Nashville. A German immigrant, Kahn was the countrys foremost industrial architect, best known for his automobile factories in the Motor City. Located next to the WPA-built airport on Murfreesboro Road, Stinson merged with Vultee in 1940. During World War II, Vultee was the third-largest producer of war materials. In Nashville, hundreds of women workers helped build P-38 Lightning fighters and single-engine Vengeance dive bombers. Over the years, the plant expanded to 2.1 million square feet and continues to be a leader in the aerospace industry. A keen eye can still spot Kahns distinctive saw tooth roof profile, which provided ventilation and lighting.
