In 1956 Ernie Barnes (1938-2009) visited the North Carolina Museum of Art while on a field trip; when he inquired of a docent where he might find the museum’s collection of works by Black artists, he was told “Your people don’t express themselves that way.” Barnes would develop into one of America’s premier Black artists and in 1978 would return to the same museum for a successful solo exhibition of his art. Here is My Miss America, Barnes’ heroic depiction of Black womanhood.
