In 1957, when I was a science student at UBC, the worlds top climatologist Dr. Sverre Pettersen warned, In the next 50 years if the present warm trend continues there will be some remarkable changes in the weather. If this continues there will be very little ice in the arctic. The ice in the arctic has been on a death spiral exactly as he predicted and by 2007 there was very little ice in the arctic in summer and far below normal in winter . At the same time Richmond rezoned half of our farms and farmland and speculation on farmland was rampant throughout BC. After I graduated in 1961 I spent a lifetime watching the climate change, and warning of the need to preserve our agricultural lands to avoid future famine and provide food for future generations. As the graph shows for arctic ice, with a decline of 2.6% per decade, time has run out. After 50 years my optimism has run out. Unlike the family businesses of the past, our world is run by a few major corporations, heedless of a changing climate or any harm they do to the environment. They are aided by climate change deniers in government that are intent on extracting and burning every bit of coal, oil, and LNG fossil fuels that can be processed and shipped. Unfortunately, we seem to be like frogs in a pot of water slowly being brought to a boil, with only a few frogs jumping out before it is too late. Our only hope now is to adapt. The worst is yet to come.
