In 1976 the infamous Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky wanted to make a movie of “Dune”, the science fiction novel written by the American author Frank Herbert. He wanted to create a very big production. The music for the film would be made by a.o. : Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream. The costumes, the spaceships and the sets would be designed by the Swiss surrealist artist H.R. Giger and by the French artist Mœbius. For the acting Jodorowsky wanted an international cast of celebrities : Charlotte Rampling, David Carradine, Orson Welles, Alain Delon, Gloria Swanson and Mick Jagger. The role of the mad Emperor Shaddam IV would be played by none other than Salvador Dali. And it was intended that Amanda Lear would take the role of princess Irulan Corrino, the daughter of the mad emperor. That this gigantic and eccentric film project ultimately never was realized, was due to the excessive costs. The script was so enormous, that the complete film would probably have a playtime of 14 hours. Finally the producers found the project too risky and they retreated. That Salvador Dali demanded $ 100,000 an hour, wasn’t really helping the case... ;-)
