In 1990, Governor Mario Cuomo signed historic legislation that created more than 3,600 units of supportive housing for homeless mentally ill people in New York City. The monumental legislation was inspired by the work of Fathers John Felice and John McVean, who founded — and still minister at — St. Francis Friends of the Poor. Today, there are 48,000 units of supportive housing statewide. As New Yorkers remember the late governor, we thank him for providing the vulnerable with a place to call home.
