In 1999, after receiving the blessing of His Holiness the Dalai - TopicsExpress

In 1999, after receiving the blessing of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in India, 6 friends and I trekked for 14 days from Jomson, Nepal into the last forbidden kingdom, Mustang. The average height in Mustang was 14,000 feet above sea level and it was very strange seeing Mt. Everest and Annapurna in the distance, looking down at the clouds. Mustang was basically cut off from the world by the Himalayas and was frozen in time, Tibetans living as they did 100 years ago. Special permission was needed from the Nepalese government to venture into Upper Mustang, and we were some of the first Westerners ever allowed to go. No phones, no electricity, no roads, nothing. We followed the Kali Gandaki River into Lo Manthang, the capital city, and met briefly with the king. He was very kind and curious as to why we would venture all the way there. I just found this footage and digitized it so I wont lose it again. Unfortunately, now it is more common for tourists to visit there and the Chinese have even built a railroad that goes right into Mustang. But this footage is pristine and the locals had no idea what a video camera even was at the time.
