In 20 years time this country will be on its knees. The damage will be irreparable and entirely self inflicted. Our jealousy and narrow mindedness will have allowed the systematic destruction of the NHS and the Welfare State, and the generation retiring will be mine, with no money and no final-salary pension, no equity and no future. The Grey Pound keeps my neck of the woods afloat. People retiring out here, taking trips out, eating out in restaurants, garden centre cafes; visiting markets, museums and spending money they were able to save because they retired with decent pensions having had a working life in which they got paid overtime and had the chance to get on. All that is gone now, and as they die out so will the regional economy because what is coming up behind them is an economic disaster waiting to happen. My generation is quite simply broke. We can barely pay the bills let alone save, and if we are lucky enough to have bought a house we be forced to sell it when we retire because we wont have the money to survive day to day. This is the havoc we are allowing governments to wreak in our name and our bitterness and bigotry, combining to create a scapegoat mentality, is playing into their hands. We are so wrapped up in looking for someone to blame we have stopped fighting for positive change. Without decent wages, decent working conditions, without decent Public Services, schools, hospitals we are nothing. It is time we fought FOR something instead of against the latest target they present us. If we dont then hell is coming and it will be our fault.
