In 2008/2009 while I served in the NYSC, in my LGA we had a CLO, Welfare Officer and a few other offices appointed and elected to serve the corpers in that LGA. We were about 30 to 35 corp members. We contributed a certain amount of money from our allowee monthly for the running of our welfare such buying BUGA and ROPE used for drawing water from the well, buying fuel and servicing A-PASS_MY_NEIGHBOUR for charging our phones and other sundry expenses. To my greatest surprise, at some point we needed to do a party for the incoming corp members and this required us to contribute more than usual. We decided to know how much we have in the purse and then we can know how much more we need to contribute. To my greatest surprise, the officials refused to give us account of our money committed into their hands. It became a tug of war; going back and forth, arguments and enmity broke out. I was broken because, there and then, I saw that Nigeria has almost no hope for credible leadership even in the minutest capacity. And I remembered how we would usually gather and criticize the government, NYSC officials; so I thought to myself if you cannot handle something as little as this, how can we trust the fate of a WARD, LGA, State or the NATION into the hands of these breed of people We have a long way to go as a NATION! We can hardly find credible minds that can execute a stainless leadership! And one of these corp members has ambitions of running for councilor in his WARD! What a misfit, he would be! What a disaster he would cause! We need LEADERSHIP! We lack LEADERSHIP; credible and stainless LEADERSHIP!
