In 2008, a bottlenose dolphin named Moko became a hero to a mother and baby pygmy sperm whale who had been beached onto a sandbar off the coast of New Zealand. Unable to find their way back to sea, the whales had gotten stuck three times, each time being rescued by humans. When the two got stuck for the fourth time, the rescuers had to discuss possibly euthanizing them to prevent the slow, painful death that would accompany being beached. As the rescuers were deliberating, Moko squeezed past the humans, got the whales off the sandbar, and guided mother and baby safely out to sea.
