In 2010, Mongolian herders suffered a huge natural disaster called a dzud. Dzuds are natural phenomena involving snow blizzards and arctic temperatures which cause the starvation and death of livestock on a massive scale. About one third of the Mongolian population is made up of nomadic pastoralists, the majority of which rely on the income from livestock. Since the disaster, the WSPA has been working in Mongolia to help farmers recover as well as to develop ways to avoid the catastrophic effects of the next natural disaster. -AP
