In 2011 an earthquake off the coast of Japan shook the ground with such great force that it triggered a tsunami that leveled a major city and caused a nuclear crisis that will impair the area for years to come. When Ahab took Naboth’s vineyard he had triggered a series of events that will curse his generation and people the same way. This “tsunami” is felt in the reading of 2 Kings 8:24—2 Kings 9. Chapter 8 ends with Joram, son of Ahab ruling Israel and Ahaziah, son of Jehoram ruling Judah. Ahaziah did evil in the sight of the Lord. (v.14-17) The war with Aram continued as Joram and Ahaziah went against Hazael of Aram. Joram was injured in the fight. (v.29) While this was happening Elisha sends one of the sons of prophets to anoint Jehu, son of Jehoshaphat as king over Israel. (9:1-6) Elisha through the prophet told of the demise of the house of Ahab, specifically the death of Joram. A series of events brought Jehu to the front lines of Ramoth-gilead where both Israel and Judah’s armies were. Both Jehu and Ahaziah were present. (vv.7-20) Jehu as prophesied enacts justice against both kings. With his trusty bow and arrow, he shot them with deadly aim and both died. (vv.26-28) Another Ahaziah (another son of Ahab) rules Judah and Jehu reigns in Israel. However, there was still unfinished business as Jehu heads back to Jezreel and as king also takes out Jezebel. Just as God told Elisha and his prophets earlier, the whole house of Ahab will perish and for Jezebel her blood will be the property of dogs. (vv.33-37) “The chief end of God is to make me (men) as comfortable and pain free as possible.” It seems that this is the philosophy of modern Christianity today. You can avoid suffering as a Christian, because God wants us happy. Wrong! God is jealous of you and He is intolerant of injustice. He establishes justice and He craves righteousness. He doesn’t enact wrath because of His arrogance, but He does it, so that we can live in harmony and flourish with Him. Ahab’s acts and his son’s blocked God’s greatest good for His people. They became the greatest evil against Him (and God’s people) and because He is just, God protects.
