In 2013, the Germanna Foundation acquired the 62-acre archaeological site that includes Germanna Ford, the major Civil War crossing by Union Troops that marked the beginning of the Battle of the Wilderness. The Germanna Foundation gave a conservation easement on that property to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, to ensure that the multiple layers of history associated with this property are never lost to development. Congratulations to the Civil War Trust, for raising the funds necessary to preserve Saunders Field in the heart of the Battle of the Wilderness for future generations.
