In Christchurch today for one of our regular Local Government New Zealand South Island meetings. There was much to talk about - mainly discussions around how to manage change and continue to best serve out communities interests over the next three years, as the impact of significant central government regulatory change and policy decisions kick in. Sitting in a building on the edge of Cathedral Square, one of the most powerful statements of the day for me came from Mayor Dalziel, who reminded us all that the costs of inadequate regulation (in the case of Chch, absence of geotech considerations in consenting) are invariably borne by the public, and not just in economic terms. Chch itself is a city in transition - being celebrated this weekend by a Festival of Transition Architecture...wish I was staying for it, some really neat community experiments in public space and public art :).
