In Honor of Womens History Month ~ Today in A Mighty Girl history, American author and abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe published Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1852 -- her anti-slavery novel which became of the best-selling novel of the 19th century. Written in response to the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, the novel sold over 300,000 copies in the US and one million copies in the UK during its first year of publication. The Fugitive Slave Law, which required law enforcement officials in free states to arrest anyone suspected of being a runaway slave and instituted harsh penalties for anyone caught helping escaped slaves, was fiercely opposed by Northern abolitionists such as Stowe. Her novel further inflamed Northern anger at the injustices of slavery and helped to fuel the abolitionist movement. Stowe’s seminal work has been credited with setting the stage for the Civil War. Legend has it that when Ms. Stowe met President Lincoln, he greeted her by saying “So you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war.” Harriet Beecher Stowe passed away in 1896 at the age of 85. Among many other honors, Ms. Stowe is also remembered as the first author of the modern age to include a young girl as a central character in a novel.
