In India there are many levels of faster and cheaper services than any formal system. For example the courier system state and private bus drivers and conductors run. No owner really cares nor do the bureaucrats . Most of this is income for the driver and conductor . Now just imagine . If we could use anyone as a courier . Anyone going by train or bus or plane . And we could rate them for their honesty, quality . Everyone could earn some extra money . Just like couchsurfing and sharing cars one could theoretically create even a multiple degree pick up via mobile apps . Relatives and Friends use other relatives and friends as carriers anyways . This is just an extension of that system to all ! And it could be linked with social media and just as in Linked In you could know that person few degrees away to check ! A kind of a Reputation Bureau public-verified could begin ! Good number of verifications could get that person a lower interest on an EMI too ;-) But there is a faster method that ensures the delivery of letters or goods in few hours. Several bus drivers and conductors in the state are providing this ‘service’ on a nominal charge. Though this method has no legal sanctity but it is very popular among individuals besides wholesalers and retailers of different commodities, including books. A wholesaler receives an order from a retailer over phone and delivers the same to him within hours through bus service. For the ‘service’, they pay some amount to the driver or conductor of the bus. In some cases, the charge is equivalent to the bus fare from one station to the other while it is negotiable in other cases. He said they sent forms, books, guides, help books and stationery items to small shopkeepers in small towns through buses. They compensate the driver or the conductor of the bus for the ‘service’. He said electricity goods, letters, domestic goods and general store commodities were also transported in a similar manner. The ‘service’ is of great convenience as letters and goods reach their destination within hours and more importantly, safely. He said the sender notes down the name of the driver or conductor, his mobile number, the bus number, the company of the bus, reaching time of the bus at the bus stand of the town where consignment was to be delivered. The information is passed on to the recipient over phone so that he could collect the material from the conductor or the driver, he added. When contacted, General Manager of the PRTC, Bathinda depot, Iqbal Singh said he had never received a complaint from anyone in this connection. tribuneindia/2010/20100623/bathinda.htm#1
