In Jeremiah 49 a summary of declaration of judgment is pronounced - TopicsExpress

In Jeremiah 49 a summary of declaration of judgment is pronounced on all the nations. Within this chapter is an interesting phrase God uses to describe a distinct quality of who He is. In verse 13 he declares “For I have sworn by myself….” How often have we made a commitment to someone only to strengthen that commitment by saying something like: “I swear;” “I promise;” “My word is good;” “I swear on my mother’s grave;” “I swear to God.” There are so many expressions used to try to convince someone of the strength of our commitment because evidently our word of commitment cannot stand alone. Why is this? Is it because we have at times in the past not kept our commitment (we lied)? Is it because we may have forgotten what we committed to and then did not fully support it? Is it that someone does not know us and thus needs to be convinced on the strength of some other know character? However, the bottom line is, we do not have the power, or authority, or reputation, or strength of character to make a commitment, especially to a stranger, and be believed. We live in a world where the norm is to not tell the truth. We as Christians should strive at always being truthful; always speaking in such a way there is no doubt about what we are saying. My friend, there is no such thing as a ‘good little white lie.’ A lie is a lie. It corrodes our character, our integrity, our believability. What is in our heart comes out of our mouth. What does our speech reveal of our character? We can never measure up to what God is able to say, but with Christ in me, I can be Christ like from this day forward. Remember, God’s reputation, the world’s view of Christianity, is at stake in what comes out of my mouth.
