In June this year Addis Standard published an article by one of its regular opinion and commentaries contributors Dr. Taye Negussie. The article was titled “A tale of two Federations,” in which the author asserted what he believed were “striking parallels–at least in basic assumptions and guiding ideological framework – between the racial federations of the defunct South African apartheid system and the current ethnic federations in Ethiopia.” In this fascinatingly detailed and authoritative paper, Tsegaye Ararssa delivers a response to Dr. Taye’s article. Tsegaye not only contested Dr. Taye’s assertion in likening the Ethiopian federal system with that of South Africa’s apartheid, but explains in detail, “why, in spite of its deficiencies and the injustices it masks, Ethiopia’s federation is not the same as apartheid federal system as its fundamental features.” This is Ethiopia’s federalism explained in captivating detail like never before. Meanwhile, owing to an ever shrinking space for free and independent ideas in Ethiopia of today, Addis Standard hopes to extend on its culture of making the platform available for debating free ideas and opinions by significant individuals who count in shaping an alternative narrative to that of the state dominated narrative. The ongoing debate on developmentalism is but one example.
