In Loving Memory of Rick James (born James Ambrose Johnson, Jr.; February 1, 1948 – August 6, 2004). The King of Punk Funk released his first album in 1978 with his backing band, The Stone City Band, called Come Get It!, the album included the hit singles, You and I and Mary Jane & pushed Come Get It! to 2×Platinum status. Rick James became noted not only as a hit maker on his own recordings but also produced successful recordings for the likes of Teena Marie, the Mary Jane Girls, the Temptations, Eddie Murphy and Smokey Robinson. His best-selling recording, 1981s Street Songs, sold over three million copies, included the hits, Give It to Me Baby, Super Freak, plus the unforgettable duet with Teena Marie, Fire and Desire. His previous album was called, The Garden of Love which had the Leroy Burgess co penned hit single called, Big Time. By now Rick James was a household name, not only writing, but producing for himself, but others also. His next album Throwin Down was released in 1982, with appearances by The Temptations, Teena Marie and Jefferson Airplane/Starship lead vocalist Grace Slick, the record was nominated for an American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B Album, the album included, Dance Wit Me, Standing on the Top (with The Temptations) & Happy (with Teena Marie). His 1983 album, Cold Blooded contained the singles, Ebony Eyes (Featuring Smokey Robinson & the US #1 R&B/Soul hit Cold Blooded. 1985 saw the release of, Glow with the title track being released as a single. Rick James originally had planned to produce a full album for Diana Ross but when Motown told him they only wanted four songs from James, he gave the songs up to Marie, including the duet, Im a Sucker for Your Love. On the morning of August 6, 2004, Rick James was found dead in his Los Angeles home at the Oakwood apartment complex on Barham Boulevard by his caretaker. James had died from pulmonary failure and cardiac failure with his various health conditions of diabetes, stroke, a pacemaker, and a heart attack. In 2007 after his passing the album, Deeper Still was released with tracks he had recorded including the song, Taste. Such a talent again, Gone Too Soon. GARY
