In March of 1967, after five years of emotional and physical abuse, 27-year-old June Maloney of Rochester, New York, finally walked out on her husband, Joseph Maloney. Joseph and June agreed to an informal separation. June took custody of their two young children and Joseph was allowed to visit whenever he wanted. Family friend Neal Dunkleberg remembers their relationship problems and said that June told him that Joseph roughed her up a few times. She said she was never beaten or bruised, but Joseph would jump around hollering and yelling and would grab her and shake her. Several weeks after June moved out, Joseph paid Neal Dunkleberg a visit. Neal experimented with chemistry as a hobby and had a lab in the basement of his mothers home. Joseph came to him with an usual request. He wanted Neal to make him a poison for a dog that kept knocking over his trash cans and throwing fits at him. Joseph was concerned about going through with it, as the dog belonged to a police officer. Joe showed interest in one particular chemical, a clear liquid which is odorless, tasteless and lethal. Neal Dunkelberg said he was cautious and locked his basement laboratory up and told his family that no one else was allowed down there. He said that Joseph sweet-talked his sister into opening the basement for him because he said he had to sterilize some instruments. Two weeks later, June arrived at Josephs house for their sons fifth birthday party. He offered her a drink and she stayed for about two hours. While at the party, June phoned her friend Wanda Mordenga, who said June sounded wound up and asked her how much she had to drink and June said she had two drinks. June later went to her apartment and Wanda went to check on her and asked if she could stay and watch over June, but June said it wasnt necessary and that she was going to bed. The next morning, Wanda was surprised to find Joseph and a doctor in the hall outside of Junes apartment. June told Wanda that she did not want to be alone with Joseph, so she stayed and watched over June. June told Wanda the doctor thought it was food poisoning, but June thought it was something else. According to Wanda, June became fearful-looking when Joseph stepped in the room and June could not tell her what she thinks really happened to her. The next day, June lapsed into a coma and was immediately hospitalized. Despite a series of tests, doctors found no cause for her rapid decline. Joseph Maloney seemed unconcerned about his wifes condition. He suggested that she might have tried to commit suicide over their separation, an idea Wanda Mordenga discredited and said that June was not suicidal, but she feared that the authorities would make Junes condition look and seem like a suicide attempt. June Maloney never regained consciousness and died on June 5th, 1967. Her autopsy revealed that she had ingested a lethal dose of the same type of chemical that Joseph had taken from Neals lab. Four hours after his wifes death, Joseph Maloney was arrested and charged with first degree murder. Joseph asked to be committed to the Rochester State Mental Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. The court granted his request. What the judge didnt know was that Joseph Maloney had once worked at the hospital and was familiar with the layout. Less than two weeks after being admitted, Joseph escaped and disappeared. Five years later and more than 3,000 miles away in Dublin, Ireland, authorities were called to investigate a burglary at the home of a Mr. Michael OShea. Monroe County, New York, District Attorneys Officer Wendy Evans Lehmann said that the Irish police knew OShea and didnt have a criminal record in Ireland. She also said that they saw no criminal wrongdoing on Michaels part and were looking for the burglars fingerprints. Everyone in the house was tested against the fingerprints and none of them were the burglar. However, upon taking Michaels prints, they learned that his real name was Joseph Maloney. He could not be arrested because Ireland and the United States had no extradition agreement. In 1986, that law was changed and Joseph Maloney was finally taken into custody, still denying his true identity. While in jail, Joseph Maloney refused to cooperate with the authorities and did not allow himself to be photographed. Two years after his arrest, the Irish-American extradition treaty was voided because of a legal technicality. Joseph Maloney walked out of prison and disappeared. Joseph Maloney has not been seen in 26 years. He is 62, has a slender build and has blue eyes and reddish hair that may now be gray. He also has a scar over his right eyebrow. Joseph Maloney would today be 79 years old.
