In Memoriam Died on this day 08/01/1916 Gunner Walter Howard Royal Garrison Artillery. Gunner Walter Howard, of the Royal Garrison Artillery, who held the license of the Brewers Arms, Middleton, prior to joining up, as well as following the occupation of assistant engineer at the Manor Mill, Chadderton, was drowned at sea. He was 35 years of age. His body was lost to the sea, so his name is on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton. The Hollybrook Memorial commemorates by name almost 1,900 servicemen and women of the Commonwealth land and air forces whose graves are not known, many of whom were lost in transports or other vessels torpedoed or mined. This vessel was sunk on this day in 1916, so Gunner Howard could have been on this ship. SS Citta Di Palermo, an Italian transport carrying Commonwealth troops, sunk by mine off Brindisi on 8th January 1916.
