In Memoriam Died on this day 27/10/1918 2nd Lieutenant William Gray McEwan 22nd Manchester Regiment Second Lieutenant William. G. McEwan, aged 34, of the Manchester Regiment was killed in action on the Italian front on October 27th, 1918. This gallant officer enlisted in the ranks three years previously and went out of France in April, 1916. In July of the same year he was wounded on the Somme, after which he came home for his commission. Returning shortly afterwards to the Western Front, he took part in a great deal of heavy fighting, until November 1917 when he was transferred to the Italian front. Prior to joining the army, this soldier who lived at Elven Cottage, Rhodes, was employed by the Heaton Mills Bleaching Company, as their Manchester representative. He was a member of the Rhodes Bowling Green, the Rhodes Cricket and Tennis club and the Rhodes Reading room. 2nd Lt McEwan is laid to rest at Tezze British Cemetery, Italy. Also 100 years ago today, one of the first casualties from Middleton in the war. Private Joseph Moran of the 1st Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, who lived at Hanging Birch, Rhodes. He is laid to rest at Bailleul Communal Cemetery, France.
