In Memoriam: Yi-Hsuen Lee 1997 – 2013 Ms. Yi-Hsuen Lee, age 16, passed away on June 30, 2013 doing something she loved the most: riding a horse. Yi-Hsuen is a familiar face in the winner’s circle in Taiwan. She began riding at the age of 11 together with her younger and old sister. She began competing at the age of 12 and won numerous national competitions in the years that followed. In 2011, she competed in the CSIY* Seoul 2011 as a member of the Chinese Taipei Equestrian Team. She was selected by the Chinese Taipei Equestrian Federation to join the “young equestrian athletes development program” in both 2012 and 2013 and had just begun competing at a higher level. When the accident occurred, she had been competing in the selection trial to represent the Kaohsiung City Team in the upcoming Taiwan National Games in October. She had already made the team by securing a 2nd place finish with another horse, before her second horse over-strided. By taking off too early, the horse crashed into the oxer, flipped over, and in the process, landed on Yi-Hsuen. Although a relatively quiet individual, Yi-Hsuen always had a smile on her face. Her signature sweet smile made her one of the most popular young rider amongst her fellow riders both locally and internationally. Riders say that if Yi-Hsuen was not on horse back or chatting with other riders about riding, she could be found in the stalls taking care of her horses. For someone whose life was filled with horses, we are certain Yi-Hsuen is still smiling and riding in the enchanted world. “Our federation expresses its sincere condolences to Ms. Yi-Hsuen Lee and her family and to the Chinese Taipei Eqnestrian Association and equestrian community” said Dr. Simon Ip, President of Hong Kong Equestrian Federation. A memorial will take place on July 11th in her home town Kaohsiung.
