In Memorium Shri K Balachander We pay tribute to eminent filmmaker and Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner Shri K Balachander, who passed away yesterday in Chennai. A multi-lingual filmmaker of films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and in Hindi like Aaina (1974), Ek Duuje Ke Liye (1981), Shri Balachander started his cinematic career as a screenwriter and soon graduated as a director with Neerkumizhi in 1965. Popularly referred to as Iyakkunar Sigaram i.e. the director who scaled the peak, his films are usually centered on unusual or complicated interpersonal relationships and social themes. In a career that spread over 45 years, he launched 65 actors, actresses and technicians - amongst them the two southern superstars Shree Kamal Haasan and Shree Rajnikanth.
