In Mob Mental.ity I choreographed the aerial duet 9.1.1. This piece has been a journey from day one. When Artistic Director Jen Alden let me hear the music for the first time, I was instantly transported in time...back to the spot I was standing in...as I watched with the rest of America...the unthinkable. I will never forget that day, my disbelief, my terror. During the rehearsals there were several times when all the aerialists had to stop and just talk. Remember, vent, share. These conversations led to other remembrances of grief shared, of fear and moments in our lives of extreme vulnerability. Once we shared the cast was able to continue rehearsing this physically and emotionally challenging piece. This all brought to mind other aspects of this tragedy. I remember fear all around me, and sadly I saw how quickly fear can turn to mistrust and even hate when we are looking for answers and dont know who to blame. I saw this in the days, months, and years following 9-11. Sadly, I think some of that fear remains to this day. Fear of what we dont understand, of people whos faith we dont share. It is my hope that through presenting this work we can focus on the OTHER extraordinary occurrence caused by 9-11. That sense of community, togetherness and healing that was felt across our nation. In our homes, our cities, our schools. People began to think more, to care deeper, to hug their loved ones longer. This is what our world needs. And while it may be difficult to remember these events, we must. Otherwise it would be simply too easy to let hate and mistrust take root in our hearts again. We must never forget.
