In November of 1982, the deer herd maintained at Swan Lake was thinned from 14 to 4 deer for the purpose of maintaining the health of the animals. Four animals were sent to the Ledges State Park wildlife exhibit; four others were given to the National Animal Disease Lab in Ames for experimentation. Two of the herds three bucks were shot and butchered. They yielded 160 pounds of meat, which was donated to the Carroll County Wildlife League to be served at the groups monthly meetings.
